About AUCA
Chess that fits student life
Founded by University of Auckland students, AUCA makes chess easy to access on campus and online.
Inclusive community
We welcome complete beginners, casual players, and rated competitors. Everyone gets a game and a friendly intro.
Student-led and simple
Run by volunteers who balance study and play. Membership and events are completely free—no hidden costs or barriers.
Growth and wellbeing
Chess is for focus and joy. We pair tournaments with relaxed sessions, making sure the club stays supportive.
What to expect
Sessions, tournaments, and support
We meet weekly during semester, with extra events through the year.
Weekly meetups
Casual games on campus with boards and clocks provided. We'll help you find a board and a game quickly.
Learning and resources
Opening prep, tactics puzzles, and post-game analysis on our Discord. Short workshops each term.
Friendly tournaments
Rapid, blitz, and theme nights. Prizes focus on participation and improvement, not just ratings.
Collaborations
We love joint events with other clubs, faculties, and local chess groups. Email us to plan something new.
Part of the chess community
Connected locally and nationally
We're proud to be part of New Zealand's vibrant chess scene.
AUCA members are encouraged to explore competitive chess through NZ Chess Federation, the national governing body for chess. If you're interested in an official rating, national tournaments, or connecting with the wider NZ chess community, Chess NZ is a great place to start.
